Lines as Inspiration

For the following project, our objective was to increase awareness of the use of the elements (line, shape, texture, etc.) within design of all objects. The element assigned to me was line. I ventured out to find lines in things such as architecture, foods, any non-apparel things in everyday life. Then I was to find corresponding examples in fashion/apparel products.

Although my element was line, I also found that it went along with colors and shapes many times as well. Here are my examples:

The picture s smaller, but this example includes criss-crossing lines going every which way, mostly diagonally. It has thick lines with thinner lines inside of them. This pattern is on the shrts of the model as well.
The picture of the girl was taken from Style.com, in the Fall 2008 collection by Marni.

The lines created by the creases in the cupcake paper are reflected as well in the pleats of this dress. Also, the curvy line of the bottom and the lines formed by the shapes are alike.

These lines in the dress and boots are more visible close up, but they are made of a sort of netted fabric that has perpendicular lines and makes the effect of a bunch of squares all over the outfit. This is much like a tall downtown building with many windows.

The picture of the buildings were from aradise.com

The silhouette of these gears create the lines of one side of the jacket worn by this model.

This is another example of perpendicular lines. However, in this example, the lines aren't making the effect of squares; squares are making the effect of perpendicular lines.

This example includes shape and color as well as line. The lines that create the silhouette as well as the lines going down the lamp and the skirt that are curved are similar.

The easter egg and dress in this example have colorful horizontal lines.

The pants in this picture are horizontal and a bright, beachy color like the chairs.

The shirt in this picture reminded me of two things: candy dots and the skating rink. This is a great example of implied lines. There aren't actually lines there, but the dots/lights trick our eye into thinking that there is a line there.

This last example is an example of lines creating geometric shapes. This is a famous Mondrian painting, which clearly inspired this shirt.
